About Me

D M Roberts is an avid bookworm, having read many different books in their time they decided to have a go at writing one of their own. Admittedly the process was harder than they thought it would be, so, hats off to all authors everywhere. The first 3 books are based on the character of Inspector Milton Billoughby- set in 1910 rural England. Billoughby is an Inspector that until now, has had quite an easy going time of it in his working days. The Long Shadows Book 1 introduces the Inspector and his family, two murders in the quaint village. The second, Petticoats and Bowler Hats is set between London and Kent during the Coronation of the new King of England.
Lost Souls is the 3rd and focuses on the disappearance of a young boy.

Out now, Billoughby 3- Lost Souls. D is so excited to have finished the third Billoughby. Writing about the Inspector and his extended family has been a thrill, hopefully you enjoy reading them as much as they enjoyed writing them.

Whereas Ria, is a modern story that shows a tragedy in your life does not define your happiness. Read how a friendship turns to love at a time when Ria least expects it, she has been through a harrowing time. The question now is, can she take back control?

D values and appreciates all reader feedback so don’t be shy! Good or bad.

A mother of 3, and Grandmother of 2 beautiful boys. From the North of England originally. D enjoys field archery, dancing, d.i.y, a little Roman re-enacting, tai-chi and yoga. A passion for taking photographs, there’s something about capturing a moment that will never be again.

I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as i have enjoyed writing them x DM Roberts

  1. I found your book by accident. I was searching for a book by another authoress Edna O’ Brian called ‘Country Girls’ & up popped your ‘County Girls’ aka Ria. Before i refreshed my search I thought I would try it. I was hooked. A great story with plenty of suspense & tension. Would definitely recommend it. Possibly make a good mini tv drama
Well done. Do you have another one in pipeline?
    Many thanks x

    • Hi there and thank you for your kind words and feedback. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the story and am flattered that you can envisage it as a TV drama. I have many more stories in my head that I hope to get down in print in the near future.
At present my full time job is taking up a lot of my time – as it rightly should – I haven’t given up writing, but it’s slower than it was.

      • Hi D
Thank you so much for your response. Also, just to let you know that I bought the kindle version on Amazon of ‘Ria’ and fully intended to leave the review on their website but was prevented from doing so as it stated that the facility was no longer available. Anyhow, I’m glad I was able to leave you my comments on your website. It’s just I wondered for future reference, whether other people might have wanted to leave feedback or reviews but were unable to do so. Also, whilst concerning the story, forgive me but I do have a little query to satisfy my own curiosity. I’ve checked through the story a few times but have probably missed it somewhere, so do excuse me, as I’ve been reading it on my phone so there are a lot of pages. How did Justin manage to transfer Ria from the house where she was staying to his Barn and then tie her up without her waking up.
        Many Thanks again

      • Hi,
I think Amazon are a law unto themselves as far as reviews etc are concerned, a few people have mentioned this.
Regarding the story, at the end of chapter 3 it mentions Justin had figured a way in and out of the house, at the beginning of chapter 4 he talks of how he subdued Ria, in my mind this indicates a drug of sorts leaving him free to simply carry her out.
I hope this clears it up for you ☺️

      • Thanks for coming back to me. I knew that I had probably missed it. I had felt it was something like that which explained Ria’s incapacitation.
Anyhow, like I mentioned previously it’s a great story, I loved it. I’m about to embark on a well-earned break for 2 weeks. As you may appreciate, I will be indulging in one of my favourite past times, reading books. I’ve read many books over the years with a variety of authors over various genres such as Lee Child, Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Denis Wheatley, Harlan Coben & many more. I quite often have 2 or 3 books on the go at the same time.
My favourite author is Wilbur Smith, I love his books and I would definitely recommend to you if you are contemplating creating another story with a strong woman as the lead character who has to face insurmountable odds & adversity on her journey, you must read ‘The Burning Shore’, I think you would love it, it might help with inspiration.
‘Anyway I digress, I have 2 of his books to catch up on. However, I will endeavour to read another of your books ‘Word’s Out’. I see it advertised on your web page. It is a subject that has always fascinated me. Our relevance to the universe, guiding Angels, is there life after death etc. for which I’m convinced that there is due to certain experiences that I have had. So, I will give it a read. In the meantime D you must be a very busy lady, but stick with it as I think you have a talent for captivating potential. I wish you well.

      • Thank you and I hope you have a wonderful holiday.
I have only read one of Wilbur Smith’s books, The Astral Plane I think it was called but it was a very long time ago and another life.
Currently I am recovering from my first bout of covid, not something I want to experience again.
        Best regards D

  2. Hi D
Finally managed to read ‘Word’s Out’ (well actually listened to it via audio). I have to say that it reminds me so much of a film I saw many years ago which I loved, when I was at Boarding school called ‘A Matter of Life & Death’ starring David Niven. This was a big deal at the time as it was in colour as many films were still in Black & White. However, it is a very similar story line to yours and set in a different time period (War time). Your story has a slightly different perspective but there are many parallel themes running through it. Needless to say I thoroughly enjoyed the film at the time and your Book. Well done!!
It is certainly a subject that makes you think.
Incidentally, I notice that ITV are starting to run a Detective Drama called ‘The Long Shadows’ , I haven’t seen it yet but I noticed that is the title of one of your books . Have they based the story on your book? You could be famous. Anyway, thanks again.
    Take care.
